Why we love this app
Avaz for Autism is adaptable and easy to use. Younger students can start off using pictures from the Avaz library customizing their folders to fit their needs. Every accommodation a child would need has been taken care of in this app. It even takes into account the future. As the child moves up the app allows you to blend pictures and type to communicate making students feel more independent. The app also has prediction with pictures and words making the transition an easy one.
What it teaches and how it works
Avaz is an Augmentative and Alternative Communication App for non-verbal children. Avaz gives children who did not have a voice an opportunity to be a part of the class. If they are working with their Speech Therapist the app can track the session to show student progress. It has the option of using the pre-made picture folders that came with the app or develop more personalized folders that can be color-coded and have anywhere from 1- 24 pictures in a folder. Folders can be made by pressing the + add new. You can either add a new message in a prior category or develop a new category. As soon as you put in a caption a picture automatically appears. If you want to take your own picture that is also an option. Once you have completed this you speak you caption such as "I have a dog named Cole". Then you tap done and it appear in the category you put it in. If you are teaching a specific lesson you may have someone add the words to the app for younger students. Older students can use the built in keyboard that can either speak for the child or be read by the teacher depending upon the student and the disability.
Why your kid won't be able to put it down
Non-verbal students have been using instruments such as the Dynavox or Picture Exchange Communication Systems where there are lots of pictures and velcro with picture getting mixed up. Now children can say "I am thirsty" or "I want to go outside" with just their iPad. Once their vocabulary is built in it becomes an everyday tool allowing them to express themselves like anyone else. This app has an extra feature called Quick Cues that are statements we say all the time like thank you or I need a break making it very easy to get their point across.
