Creative Book Builder
Easily create iBooks compatible digital resources directly on the iPad.
Publisher: Tiger Ng

Why we love this app

Creative Book Builder allows students to create original works in the standard e-book/e-pub format, providing an easy way to share their work. Students are able to create a digital book with text, images, audio, and even video features, and it all can be done directly from the iPad. The ease of use will encourage students to complete teacher-assigned projects, as well as give students a format to create and distribute works that are created solely for personal enjoyment. Is your child a budding poet? Creative Book Builder would allow them to create, publish, and share their own original book of poetry.

What it teaches and how it works

The creativity tool provides an amazing mechanism for students to create and share their work. The app includes several pre-designed formats that allow for quick book creation. Select "Classic" and give your book a title. Tap on the title from the displayed list of books and you are on your way. The app automatically creates chapters for the book, although you can change the name of the chapter. Click "Add Element" to add text, media, import a file, or a wide selection of other element types. Adding text can be done in title or paragraph format, ePub markdown, or HTML format. The media tab allows you to add images, video, or music directly from the iPad, as well as record new audio. Search in the app for Creative Commons images via Flickr, as well as import video directly from YouTube or Vimeo. Existing files can be imported from Dropbox or Google Docs, as well as importing via FTP or a URL. Several very interesting features are built in to the "Misc." element. Here you can create tables, drawings, bookmarks, and links. In addition, Creative Book builder has tools available that allow you to create your own drawings, equations (using the standard LaTeX format), and can even import from Quizlet.com for flashcard decks. The app will even create a scannable QR code for you just by typing in the URL that you want converted to a QR Code! A handy preview is always available to see what your book will look like in both ePub and PDF formats. Publishing your book takes only the tap of a button. Once published, the book can be shared through email, iTunes, Dropbox, Google Drive, or even directly from device to device if both are on the same network.

Why your kid won't be able to put it down

The ability to so quickly and easily create eBooks that can be viewed on a variety of devices and shared so easily will encourage many students to create more projects. Research shows that once students are publishing to a wider audience ("more than just my teacher may see this"), the quality of the work increases. This could also be a way for students to share their original works that are not school-related. The app could be used to create instruction books for a students' favorite hobby, a digital scrapbook of their school year, or even a self-published novel.
